I’m so over the moon excited to share this primary bedroom reveal with you today! Since welcoming baby W almost six months ago (the time has flown!), my husband and I have been spending a lot more time at home. We still make it a priority to get out for a nice dinner and fun strolls a few times a week (and we just took our first family vacation to a favorite beach house on the South Shore) but we always look forward to returning home now. I think we’re just savoring this special time together nesting as a new family. Because of this, we’ve put forth an extra effort to make our home as cozy and welcoming as possible but our primary bedroom was lacking. We wanted to create a room that felt peaceful and serene so as soon as the holidays passed we began tackling this project.
Shades of blue are always my go-to when I want to create a relaxed vibe so we decided to go with a crisp navy and ivory color palette accented with natural woods and textures to create a classic chic feel with subtle coastal hints. Once we had a more concrete visual of the type of room we wanted, the (online – so much easier with a baby!) shopping began.
The first thing we shopped for was the bedding as I knew that would set the tone for the rest of the decor. Both J&I adore the feeling of being snuggled up in soft flannel from the beginning of fall through late spring so we didn’t even bother looking at non-flannel options. I was a little worried that we’d have trouble finding anything chic in this material but my heart just about burst when I discovered the gorgeous signature toile floral flannel bedding by Garnet Hill (c/o). It was exactly what I had envisioned for the room! And I’m so pleased with the quality of this bedding – it’s the perfect thickness and it’s so soft you feel like you’re enveloped in a cloud. The timeless toile print couldn’t be more classic and I know we’ll enjoy this bedding for years to come.
After we chose the bedding, it made it so much easier to decide on window treatments. Since I had such a wonderful experience using Country Curtains for W’s nursery, I decided to check out their selection before looking anywhere else. There were so many great choices available it was hard to decide but I felt that a classic ticking stripe curtain (c/o) would allow us flexibility when we wanted to change up our bedding for summer or for the holidays (I think a Christmas tartan duvet would pair nicely with the ticking!). To create some depth and to add texture, we also ordered a set of the Sherwood Bamboo Roman Shades (c/o). These are also a much prettier alternative for creating privacy than the blinds that were already hung in the room. To finish the look, I knew a hint of gold would make the windows pop and the antique brass color of the Becket Pineapple Finials and Adjustable Rod & Bracket (both c/o) work wonderfully. As always, the service and products from Country Curtains were top-notch – they are honestly one of my favorite companies to work with.
To create a “conversation” between the pieces, I decided to incorporate the same ticking pattern from the curtains in a few pieces on the bed. We chose these three ticking stripe corded pillows in navy blue (c/o) and this ticking stripe gathered bed skirt (c/o) in navy blue from Country Curtains and I found these two farmhouse bolster pillows (c/o) from Etsy shop, Irish and Company, to complete the look. Marg Ross, the shop proprietress, was a delight to work with and she also makes beautiful boutique pillows and mattresses. I’m really impressed with her attention to detail and love the carefully piped edges on the bolster pillows! Overall, I think the classic ticking stripes in all three bedding elements play wonderfully with the toile duvet and sheets.
To finish off the bedding, I knew a pair of personalized monogrammed pillows (c/o) would take the crown and boy, do they ever! I had worked with Catherine Futch, of Peppermint Bee, in the late fall to create a beautiful monogrammed boudoir pillow for W’s room, and because it came out so well I wanted to see if she could create two for our bedroom, as well. Catherine is a joy to work with and her talent is honestly show-stopping. I can’t even tell you how much I think these pillows elevate the room to a new standard! If you’re shopping for monogrammed pillows, she should definitely be tops on your list!
Next, I wanted to update the lighting for our nightstands and my heart was set on a pair of ginger jar lamps. I looked high and low for the perfect pair and I know I found them with the gorgeous Judy Table Lamps by Safavieh from Decor Market (c/o). I love the substantial size of these and the bold, playful patterns. I think they really hum well with the toile and ticking patterns and the style is classic enough to go with a myriad of other patterns and colors which will be great later on when we decide to switch things up with the bedding.
To create a bit of dramatic height, I knew I wanted to create a gallery wall above our bed. At first, I considered prints of coral and other sea life but decided that would be a little too coastal-themed and then I discovered this set of Oak Leaf botanical prints (c/o) from Etsy shop Belle Maison Art and promptly fell in love! It felt perfect and I think the leaves and nuts really helped to ground the room and keep it from feeling overly coastal. Stacey and Scott, the Etsy shop owners, were wonderful and helped me choose the archival canvas textured paper in the 8×10 size. A fun fact about this set of prints: Stacey created them for an episode of HGTV’s Fixer Upper last year! The couple has two additional Etsy shops, Belle Botanica and Belle Mer Graphics and two sites, Belle Maison Art and Belle Botanica – check them out!
To play off the gold hue of the curtain rod, I knew the botanical prints would look stunning in gold frames and I found the perfect ones at Art to Frames. If you’re not familiar, Art to Frames is an awesome online framing site where you can easily upload digital photos and have them delivered to your door framed and ready to hang. Since I already had the prints at home, I chose six of the 12 x 14 gold collage frames (c/o) with UV non-glare glass and double matting and just popped the prints in when they arrived. I’ve never opted for the non-glare glass before but I have to tell you, I don’t think I’ll ever want to purchase another frame without it – it makes such a difference! And I love the detailed beading and design of the frames which lends a richness to the prints. I really enjoyed ordering from Art to Frames and if you’re interested in trying them out, you can save 20% with code CBB20 through July 31, 2017. 😉
To make it more of our room, I created a small gallery wall dedicated to W and then realized I was neglecting our other (fur) baby, Sammy, who’s been a part of our family for almost 12 years now! So I came up with the idea of having a pet portrait done and when I scrolled past the prettiest watercolor portrait of a King Cavalier by Sweet Ink Design Co on Instagram, I knew exactly who I wanted to ask to paint our kitty. Working with Heather was a relaxed and fun process – I sent her two images of Samster, talked a bit about the background and a few weeks later, the most adorable watercolor (c/o) arrived in the mail. Heather captured Sammy’s likeness so well and I’m so happy we have this special memento. Heather also creates the most beautiful custom wedding invitations!
Details can really make or break a room and when done right, they add the perfect touch of polish and finesse and that’s exactly what I feel the monogrammed items I chose for this room do. The monogrammed sterling frame from Beverly Bremer Silver Shop (c/o) on my vanity is one of my favorite frames in our house. The simple beading is so classic and I love W’s engraved initials along the bottom. It was a true pleasure working with Mimi who helped choose the font and style of the engraving. And the frame arrived wrapped in the most beautiful way which elevated the entire experience. I hope one day I’ll be able to visit this silver shop in Atlanta in person!
I always like having a glass of water on my nightstand but I hate getting water rings on the antique marble tops so these beautifully monogrammed cocktail napkins (c/o) by Monogram Mary are the perfect solution. I love something pretty that also serves a purpose! These were delivered so quickly and are flawless!
I feel the same way about the sweet monogrammed tissue cover (c/o) by Elizabeth Joyce Monograms – it hides an otherwise ugly tissue box with something lovely and personalized. So, so much nicer to look at, don’t you think? And the customized colors match the room so well!
I hope you enjoyed this tour of our primary bedroom re-design! It is such a joy to retire to this inviting room every evening now – a true sleep sanctuary!
